My Sky-High Strategy for Salesforce Success: A Lesson from the Flight Deck

Updated: Jun 10

In the world of Salesforce implementation, my experience has been a roller coaster of triumphs and tribulations. From the early days of falling into common traps to the eventual development of a robust methodology, my journey has been a testament to the power of resilience and innovation.

Picture this: I'm a new Business Analyst at Wells Fargo, freshly acquainted with Salesforce, tasked with requesting new fields from our developer team. Brimming with confidence, and eager to make my mark, I dive headfirst into the process—only to find myself caught in a web of miscommunication and oversights. What seemed straightforward quickly turned into a tangled mess of backtracking and frustration.

But from those early struggles emerged a valuable lesson: the importance of a systematic approach to business systems, and specifically, field creation. Drawing inspiration from my husband and the meticulous checklists he uses as a pilot, I set out to develop a methodology that would ensure clarity, consistency, and efficiency in every field implementation.

Over the years, this methodology has evolved and matured, guided by real-world experiences and informed by the ever-changing landscape of Salesforce. Today, it stands as a tried-and-true solution for businesses grappling with the complexities of CRM customization.

I'm delighted to share my checklist, divided into five key components. Let's dive in!

Basic Information: Give your field an identity that's easy to understand and intuitive to your team.

  • Field Name and Label: Choose clear, descriptive names that align with your business objectives.

  • Help Text/Tool Tip: Provide additional guidance where necessary to ensure clarity.

Function: Bring your field to life by filling in all the little details.

Access: Ensure the right people can interact with this field the way you intended.

Visibility: Expose your new field in all the most helpful places.

Data Management: Sprinkle some pixie dust (i.e. business intelligence) on to this new field to watch it truly sparkle!

By following this comprehensive checklist, you can avoid common pitfalls and ensure that each field implementation aligns seamlessly with your unique needs and objectives. It's a methodology born from the trenches—a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence.

In the flight deck, missing an item on a checklist can have life-or-death consequences. While the stakes may not be as dire in the world of business systems, the impact of overlooking crucial details can still be significant, leading to operational inefficiencies and painful data inaccuracies. Luckily, Salesforce's forgiving nature allows for swift corrections with just a few clicks or a mass update.
